Green Mountain Coffe Roasters Visit La Chispa

gmcr arrivalThis past January (2010) a delegation from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters visisted La Chispa and took some time to learn about the library and our current projects. During the course of their visit we discussed the new solar panels and batteries which have been installed as a result of a generous grant from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.

solar batteriesBeing able to "un-plug" the library from the local power grid, when needed, helps insure that we can continue to provide services to the community. The power grid in Nicaragua has been know to be less than 100% reliable and being able to keep our doors open, and programs running, is a great benefit. The solar setup at La Chispa is one of a twin, of sorts. The El Chile Weaving Association, Tejidos Indigenas, have also installed a panel and battery system (also funded by GMCR) for similar purposes. This sustainable technology gives both locations the ability to maintain planned and needed services to their communities.

After leaving La Chispa the Green Mountaineers were off to Selva Negra, Granada and Managua as well as visits to coffe farms, cooperatives and processing plants in the rural communities of Matagalpa and Esteli. Some of these intrepid souls (others having to leave to retun to the neccesities of work and family life) came to San Ramon for a few days to experience some of our life and work in there and in neighboring communities.
