Since 2005, Planting Hope has hosted service-learning group trips to Nicaragua. The trips have included home-stays in the village of San Ramon, visits to indigenous cooperatives, cof-fee farms and eco-tourism sites, activities with rural and city school children and visits to cen-ters for children with disabilities.
Groups typically bring activities to share with community members as their half of the cul-tural exchange. Our Nicaraguan hosts open their homes, schools and communities to us as they share their music and dance, coffee and typical foods, love of baseball and soccer, cul-tural pride and incredible spirit in the face of material hardships.
Delegation members aged 6 to 78 have helped with construction, painted school rooms and murals, learned Spanish, played, worked and danced with Nicaraguan youth while making lasting friendships.
